How Hiya’s Kids Greens Turned My Picky Eaters Into Nutrition Detectives

An honest review from a mom who’s tired of the veggie battles

I never thought I’d be the mom teaching her 8 and 10-year-old about micronutrients. But here we are, a few months into our Hiya Kids Daily Greens + Superfoods journey, and my kids are asking me things like “Mom, what does zinc do for my immune system?” and “Can we look up what spirulina helps with?

The biggest surprise is they’re actually excited about it.

If you’re reading this with a picky eater (or two) who refuses anything identifying as a vegetable, I get it and I’ve been there. I’ve hidden spinach in smoothies and snuck zucchini into homemade chicken nuggets, only to have them refused anyway.

But something shifted when we started Hiya Greens, and it wasn’t just about getting nutrients into them. It was about getting them excited about why nutrients matter.

    The Problem I Didn’t Know I Had

My daughter Mia (10) is a decent eater, but my son Charlie (8) is a textbook picky. He refuses to eat anything green or “earthy”… you know the type.

I was so focused on the what – trying to sneak nutrients in however I could – that I completely missed the why. Why should they care about eating well? Why do their bodies need certain things?

Every meal felt like a negotiation. I was the “bad guy” pushing vegetables while they were just trying to survive dinner.

Then my friend mentioned how her kids actually looked forward to their Hiya Greens smoothies. Not because it tasted like chocolate, but because they understood what it was for.

    That got my attention.

What Made Me Try Hiya Greens

Honestly? I was skeptical. Another supplement company promising to solve my picky eater problems? Sure.

But three things made me curious enough to try:

Clean ingredient list. No artificial colors, no high fructose corn syrup, no synthetic fillers. Just real food ingredients I could actually pronounce. As someone who reads every label, this mattered.

Real whole food ingredients. We’re talking organic broccoli, spinach, kale, carrots – actual vegetables, not synthetic versions trying to pretend they’re vegetables.

The approach felt different. Instead of hiding nutrients behind sugar, Hiya seemed to be saying “here’s what your body needs, and here’s why.”

    The Game-Changer: Making It Educational

Here’s where everything shifted. Instead of just giving them their Greens + Superfood smoothie and moving on, I started using it as a conversation starter:

“Today let’s look up what pumpkin seeds do for our bodies.”

“Want to learn why our cells need folate?”

“Should we figure out what makes spirulina that crazy blue-green color?”

Suddenly, we weren’t just taking a supplement. We were becoming nutrition detectives.

Mia became fascinated by how each nutrient strengthens her body differently. Charlie became obsessed with learning that iron helps carry oxygen “like tiny delivery trucks.”

These days, Charlie comes home from school, grabs an orange, and says, ‘“I’m getting some extra vitamin C today— we had three kids out in class””

The Greens became a bridge to bigger conversations about how their bodies work, why different foods do different things, and how they can take ownership of feeling strong and healthy.

What I Actually Notice (The Real Results)

I’m not going to tell you Hiya’s Kids Daily Greens + Superfoods transformed my kids overnight into vegetable-loving angels. That’s not how this works.

But here’s what I genuinely observe:

More stable energy. Charlie used to crash hard in the afternoons— cranky and unfocused. I’ve noticed those crashes happen way less now. Could be coincidence, could be the natural B vitamins. Either way, I’ll take it.

Better cold weather season resilience. Every school year feels like it takes about a day and a half before the ‘yuck’ starts making the rounds. Knowing my kids are getting those extra nutrients gives me confidence we can fight off whatever’s going around.

Increased food curiosity. This is the big one. They ask questions now. They want to understand what different foods do. Mia even asked to try Brussels sprouts last week (she didn’t like them, but I was so proud she took the initiative!).

Less food-related stress for everyone. I’m not constantly worried they’re missing essential nutrients, and they’re not constantly being nagged about vegetables.

    The Not-So-Perfect Parts (Because Honesty)

Let’s be real about a few things:

It’s not cheap. Quality ingredients cost money. But when I compare it to what I was spending on various supplements, organic produce they wouldn’t eat, and special “kid-friendly” health foods, as I love to say, “the math maths”.

Consistency matters. If they skip it for a few days, I notice the difference in their energy and mood. This needs to be daily, which means I need to remember it daily (mom brain is real).

It doesn’t replace vegetables. This supports their nutrition, but they still need whole foods. The difference is now they’re more open to trying them because they understand why their bodies need these nutrients.

Why This Approach Works (The Mom Psychology)

As parents, we want our kids to make good choices when we’re not around. Teaching them why healthy choices matter sets them up for a lifetime of self-care and prioritizing their health.

When Mia chooses water over soda now, it’s not because I’m making her—it’s because she understands what hydration does for her brain. When Charlie asks for “the green powder” in the morning, it’s because he’s connected it to something that helps him feel good.

This shift from “Mom says I have to” to “I understand why and I want to” changes everything with kids.

    The Bottom Line

A couple months in, Hiya Kids Daily Greens has become more than a “chocolate drink” in our house. It’s become a tool for teaching my kids to be intentional about their health.

Is it magic? No. Will it turn your picky eater into a kale enthusiast overnight? Definitely not.

    But if you want to:

    • Fill nutritional gaps while your picky eater figures out vegetables
    • Start meaningful conversations about health and nutrition
    • Help your kids develop a positive relationship with self-care
    • Reduce your stress about whether they’re getting what they need

Then yes, I think it’s worth trying.

The real win isn’t just the nutrients (though those matter). It’s raising kids who understand that taking care of their bodies is something they get to do, not something they have to do.

Honestly? That’s a lesson worth way more than the cost of a monthly supplement.

Quick FAQ (Because I Know You’re Wondering)

How long before you noticed changes? About 2-3 weeks for energy levels, but the curiosity about nutrition started almost immediately. This is just my personal observation with my specific kids.

Do they actually like the taste? They didn’t love it plain with milk, but when we added banana and peanut butter, they started asking for it like a treat. Huge win!

Is it worth it compared to other kids’ supplements? For the ingredient quality and the educational opportunities it’s created, yes. But every family’s budget and priorities are different.
